Panic Away - Click Here!Social anxiety is defined as having the fear of being around others in social situations.  It stems from fear of judgment, criticism, or anxiety over not being accepted.  It is important to note that these feelings are perceived and not real.  Eventually, those with social anxiety will retreat to solitude to protect themselves.  If you have social anxiety or somebody you know possibly does here are some of the symptoms to look for.  We’ll break the symptoms down into two categories.  One will be the symptoms that trigger an anxiety attack.  The other is the emotional symptoms of somebody who has a social anxiety disorder.

Common symptoms that trigger social anxiety attacks:

o Meeting somebody new when you were not expecting it – the element of surprise does not sit well
o People focusing attention on you - even if it is positive
o Doing certain things in public where people can see you – swallowing, writing, talking, using a telephone
o Extreme reactions to embarrassing situations – severe blushing or uncontrollable shaking
o Public speaking for work or social situations – even if you know the topic or it is a simple toast at a wedding
o Meeting individuals you perceive to be more important than you – authority figures, an athlete, or a celebrity
o Somebody asking you a question – even if it is where the nearest gas station is that can cause extreme anxiety
o Being noticed by others – they may think your dog is cute or your shoes are great but you don’t like it
o Going to social gatherings – you feel irrelevant and like you have nothing to say so you shy away from the socializing
o Having to go to a doctor or dentist appointment – knowing you are around people that may be sick or need a small procedure triggers extreme anxiety

Emotional symptoms tied to social anxiety:
Anxiety is obviously one of the most prevalent emotional symptoms that people with social anxiety have.  When you have a constant feeling of anxiety it is impossible to relax, get a good night’s sleep, and stay focused on what you need to take care of on a daily basis.  In the end, something has to give and it usually ends up being your participation in life.  The other symptoms that are emotionally tied to social anxiety are:

o Intense fear over irrational things
o Constant nervousness and edginess
o Automatically thinking negative about situations even when they are neutral or positive
o Dry throat and mouth even when you are properly hydrated
o Involuntary trembling and muscle twitches when you are around others
o A pounding heart that is racing so much it feels like it is coming right out of your chest
o Excessive sweating and clamminess
o Blushing over things that would not usually be considered embarrassing

Nobody wants to have social anxiety.  The symptoms are very easy to find though and that is very positive because it gives you solid information for finding solutions to treat those symptoms.  There are many ways to permanently cure social anxiety and get those who suffer from it back out into the world – enjoying it!
